WHO WE ARE
Mark Haarer Consulting, LLC was founded to help clients make sense of and manage risk. Its founder, Mark
Haarer, has 19 years of experience in the life and
health insurance industry, with most of that time devoted to the group
health insurance business. His primary role has been that of internal
consultant, giving him the combined insights of an insurance company
insider and an external consultant. Mark is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and Member of the American
Academy of Actuaries.
Prior to founding this consulting practice, he held a management
position with Lincoln Re Risk Management Services, which was then one
of the largest, most successful, and most forward-thinking players in the employer stop loss
business. While there he played a key role in building their highly successful
program. Accomplishments included ground-breaking work in the study
of large claims; working with medical staff to pioneer new approaches;
initiation of R&D and enterprise risk management functions; and
the upgrading of rate manuals, underwriting support tools, reserve models,
and reporting systems. Other former areas of practice in the health
care field include reinsurance, small group insurance, medical savings
accounts, and other niche markets. Work experience outside of health
care includes life insurance and annuities.
Mark has performed many actuarial and management roles in the health
insurance industry, including product design, new product rollout, product
pricing, underwriting and renewal strategies, incentive compensation
strategies, reserve valuation, financial reporting, management information
reporting, profitability analysis, strategic planning, research and
development, theory development, enterprise risk management, reinsurance,
and mergers and acquisitions. As a credentialed actuary, he is skilled
at building financial models, at analyzing and interpreting complex
data, and in the application of probability theory and other complex
mathematics.
In his various roles, Mark has developed a reputation for insightfulness,
innovation, problem-solving, and accurate and unbiased analysis.
